Brighton Film Studios

Brighton has its own Film Studios again!

Some time back in the last century Brighton once had film studios, and now we have them back!!

BRIGHTON & HOVE FILM STUDIOS LIMITED has been formed as a subsiduary of The Brighton Film School which has moved into larger premises so that their students can run studios for Brighton. The Film School has been expanding considerably since it was started in 1999 and now attracts students from all over the world - Australia, Spain, Egypt, Denmark, Latvia, Turkey, Estonia and even the USA - in addition to running courses for local people.

By specialising in motion picture production it receives the support of the British film industry, and students have gone on to direct, produce and edit after receiving this vocational training.  The Brighton Film School specialises in part-time courses, making it particularly attractive to those who can afford neither the time nor the high fees charged by the full-time film schools.

Since January 2004 courses have been run from their new premises at The Brighton Forum in Ditchling Road near the "Level", a nearby park, and this move has enabled them to run a professional studio too.  Many production companies come to film in Brighton, but they just shoot and go home as there is no base for them whilst here.  In fact, the film school has received many phone calls from such companies who ask for everything from locations and film stock to students who, of course, are very keen to go out and help.  Only recently, Carlton TV was filming a children's drama in Rottingdean, and invited our students as runners. Sky, Granada and the BBC have also had student help.

By having an equipped studio the film school is now able to provide an interface between their students and film professionals who come to the area, and can offer a stage with lights, dolly and camera equipment, production office with professional software, a fully-fitted location vehicle, equipment hire and production consumables as well as maintaining a database of local crew and talent which was previously done by Screen South before they decided to leave Brighton.  Thus a professional service is offered, supervised by professionals and manned, of course, by students, who are thus able to gain very real hands-on experience.

The move has been welcomed by the educational bodies within the film industry who see this unique opportunity for students, and major film rental companies who see this development as an opportunity to have local representation at the new Brighton Film Studios.
