The Trench

A First Term one minute exercise by the 2003/4 One Year Group shot on miniDV.

Art Director Charlie Knight's parents were planning a swimming pool in their garden but producer Zoë Ball had other ideas and in a short space of time their hole was converted into a World War I trench!!!

An early morning call plus smoke machine produced the desired effect...

A.R.P. - Trailer

This trailer has been cut from the full version and is made from some of the exterior footage shot by the 2005/6 One Year Group in their final term on 35mm.  A 35mm Caméflex was used on the exteriors and our silent Mitchell BNCR captured all the action in the studio where a particularly good set was built.  We then used a pyrotechnics expert to blow up the house...

Director Dan Parkes now has his own production company and the full version can be downloaded from his website where you can also buy a DVD copy which includes extras with a 40 minute "Making Of" and uncut rushes.  Winner of an Imperial War Museum competition!

 A.T.M.*

Another film directed by Dan Parkes.  Strictly speaking, this was a one minute brief for the 2005/6 One Year Group in their first term, but we loved the two minute version so forgave them!

Shot on miniDV and stars Dan's fellow student Francesca Contento who had come over from Rome for the course.  She didn't come here to act, but we reckon she did a great job.  The Making Of on the DVD (again available from Dan) shows how a great green screen effect was created.

 NiQuitin Commercial

Shot on 16mm for the Kodak Students' Competition.

Many have since been looking for this bar all over Brighton, but we struck the set later that day...

 Peerless - Trailer

 Shot on S16mm

The students were very interested in the history of the Brighton West Pier, so made a 20 min documentary about it,  This is a cut-down trailer.

Physio Sport Commercial

Shot on 16mm

Made for the Kodak Students' Commercials Competition, it features "Sheffield Sam" and his amazing dancing.

Small Fry

Shot on miniDV

This reminds me of the happy days when I was working on The Avengers.  A mad scientist has his experiment go badly wrong.  Students were told to make a short containing 4 objects - a Jar, Car, Football and a River.  This is what they produced...

 Smiley Face

Shot on miniDV with anamorphic sqeeze.

Again this is where the students were told to create a short around four different objects - Cheese, a Car, Book and a Coffee Pot.

Red Letter*

Red Letter was shot in Techniscope on a 2 perf 35mm Caméflex CM3 giving 2.35 without anamorphics.

Shot entirely on location in Brighton and Lewes, which became Paris in 1940.

The French resistance make an assassination attempt on Hitler...

Director, Writer and DP: Edilberto Restino; Editor and Special FX: Dan Rickard

The Potato Family*

Shot by the 2008 Summer School on a DSLR - Canon EOS 5D producing a wonderful 4k result which streamed easily into the Avid for editing.

Originally conceived as a spoof commercial for Smash, this animation took a slightly different turn!

Director: Dan Fryer; Producer/DP: Sami Goddard; Editing/Costume Design: Natalie Kirton ("John Braybourne Award" Winner) and Set Design by Ilja Cernov

Who Cares?*

Shot entirely in the studio on our S35mm Mitchell BNCR, wth Green Screen used for the dream sequence and open door shots.

An elderly man enjoying his retirement pleasures of drinking, smoking and betting on the horses gets a letter from Social Services informing him that he is going to get a Home Help, and gets more than he bargained for.

Director: Simon Bennett-Leyh; DP: George French; Editor and Special FX: Dan Rickard
