Welcome to The Brighton Film School

LATEST NEWS!!

An MSc in Cinematography!!!

Yes - A TECHNICAL Masters' in Film, and not just another MA (as in "I've got a Masters' in Film.  Don't know anything about cameras but can write an essay on Fellini") which DOESN'T get you a job.

The BRIGHTON FILM SCHOOL has now got together with the University of Greenwich in London to create an original MSc in Cinematography.  (Those with a more artistic leaning will gain an MA instead).

"In my opinion the Brighton Film School One Year Diploma Course is equivalent to a good 1st class honours degree and a sound and valid qualifier for a place on our Masters." - Dr Chris Woollard, Cinematography Programme Leader, University of Greenwich.

This new 2 Year MSc program will be open to all applicants with a relevant degree (and subject to interview) OR just ONE YEAR to successful Brighton Film School Diploma Course graduates with a separate degree, or without a separate degree but with another acceptable higher education qualification and/or professional work experience (again subject to interview with the university).  Two alumni have already started their MSc year at Greenwich, with another booked in for next September.

Industry supporters of this new exciting program include Arriflex and Panavision.

See above links for full details.

Also - TANNISHTHA CHATTERJEE - star of BRICK LANE
has agreed to join our panel of lecturers as guest Drama Coach
for the One Year Course

For the not so technically minded, we would like to reassure you that no potatoes were harmed during the making of this film, and filming was monitored by an observer from the NLPCP.

Brighton - The Place To Be... Where film was pioneered in 1896 !

Our First Patron was:  The Late Jack Cardiff OBE

WEDNESDAY 22nd APRIL 2009:  We received the sad news that Jack Cardiff died on the morning of 22nd April.  We have some consolation that he had an incredible life during his 95 years and thankfully, died very peacefully early this morning at his home surrounded by his family.  Jack endeared himself to the students on his very first visit:  He was sitting at the Steenbeck watching their rushes and they told him that they were going to finish shooting the last few scenes the following week.  He said "Would you mind if I came along to help you?"  They obviously couldn't believe their ears...

Jack and I agreed that God is the best DP.  I reckon God now has his work cut out, so look out for Technicolor sunsets!

Bless you Jack - for all you have done.  We have all been inspired.

OTHER COURSES

Whilst our courses are basically industry-approved post grad ones,  we also cater for those who want to find out more about film production techniques with our shorter courses.  If, however, you feel like taking a university "media" course as well, it is suggested that you take that course after, and not before, one of our courses, as you will then have a better understanding when you move on in your studies.

The picture (left) shows students lining up our S35mm Mitchell BNCR during rehearsals for ARP.  The Mitchell was acquired from Paramount in LA a few years ago, and had been used on many films, including the TV series "Cheers".  For its use over here, they kindly converted its video tap to PAL.  We link it to a Sony GVD deck (Oli on the extreme left is looking at its screen) so that we can tape all takes and immediately try it in the Avid.

OUR NEXT COURSE IS OUR FULL TIME THREE WEEK SUMMER SCHOOL WHICH STARTS ON MONDAY 2nd AUGUST 2010

Then there is our FLAGSHIP Course held on Fridays for One Year.  This will include shooting on S35mm.

DRAMA

We at the Brighton Film School emphasis the importance of drama in Film Education, both in the training of Directors and Writers.  The important discipline of improvisation is a particular aid to the latter who have to enact each character as they are created.  Whilst we include this as part of the One Year Course, we have decided to hold special separate courses for others who may find this useful, including not just the screenwriter but the novelist too.

We are therefore launching a DRAMA IMPROVISATION COURSE FOR WRITERS which will be lead by Freyja Sewell, a Bedales Alumnus who trained at the Oxford School of Drama.  This will be a 5 week course starting shortly - probably in the New Year - at a cost of £100.

Improvisation
Unfreezes the petrified imagination
Develops narrative skills and
Helps explore the nature of spontaneous creativity

The MEISNER TECHNIQUE courses for Actors who want to learn how to React will be held by Maria Lloyd.  These will initially be One Day Courses held on a Saturday, and will start in the New Year.

JUNIOR FILM SCHOOL

Following a very successful KIDS' SUMMER SCHOOL it has now been decided to offer a PART-TIME JUNIOR FILM SCHOOL on Saturday afternoons.  There are now regular 10 week courses running from 1.30pm-4.30pm and are ideal for children aged 9-14.  Children will learn to plan, script, shoot and edit a short film in small groups under the guidance of industry professionals.  The fee for the complete course including the use of all equipment and materials is £240.  All students will receive a DVD of their completed film and certificate at a Premiere which will be open to their family and friends.  Please apply to www.kidsfilmschool.com or telephone Ewan on 01273 573857.  Please note that this course is independent and not part of the Brighton Film School, although we recognise it academically, ie approve its educational standards.

SUMMER SCHOOL is held every year in August

Last year's course went wonderfully well and those on it lunched with DAISY from KEEPING UP APPEARANCES as actress Judy Cornwall was our special guest.

So if you just want a Summer break next year, then this intensive 3-week full time Summer School may suit you, but for that professional polish if you also have the time and energy to commit, then consider our very exclusive One-Year ABFS Diploma Course in Motion Picture Production which is only for the very dedicated.  Students for this course are hand-picked from hundreds of applicants.

Other Courses
All courses are, of course, held for YOU, so we are always open to suggestions.  If there is a particular course you would like, then send an email to me:  franz@brightonfilmschool.org.uk
For example, you may prefer a time when you're not working, such as Saturdays, or you may like a series of courses on Film Appreciation.  Or a Crash One-Day Course of Cinematography.  Or Screenwriting.  Just let me know, and if there is enough interest, then we will organise it.

Studios
We have a small Stage with professional lights (Kino Flo, HMI etc), camera equipment (S35mm, S16mm, HD), production office with professional software (Avid), makeup and costume room and a fully-fitted location vehicle.  We also provide equipment hire and carry a range of production consumables from Arri Media.
Projection is with the very latest JVC DLA-HD2K Digital Projector, a very special machine with a "Scaler", enabling any resolution lower than 2K (eg VHS, DVD, miniDV etc) to be ramped up to 1920x1080.  The result is stunning, and is projected onto an 8' screen.
